'We don't allow it in any other public service' | Andrew Copson on faith schools | BBC Radio 5 Live
The UK Government proposed to allow all state-funded faith schools in England to base 100% of pupil admissions on religion. Since 2007, all new Academies (known as Free Schools) with a religious character have been limited to selecting 50% of pupils on the basis of faith.
Almost all new state schools are Academies. This so-called ‘50% cap’ will now be lifted for all new Free Schools and all those that have opened since 2007. Humanists UK has condemned this move, and has called for an end to all discrimination in the state school system.

Atheism vs religion over 3,000 years: who REALLY invented the modern world?
Переглядів 2,4 тис.5 місяців тому
In the earliest human civilisations, there were many people whose approach to life was what today we could call humanist: think for yourself, act for everyone. As far back as records go, there is ample evidence - some fragmentary, some extensive - of people who believed this was the only life we have, that human beings were the makers of their own fate, and that notions of gods were, at best, a...

The problem on US politics is both side exaggerate their points to demonize their opponent. Once you demonize your opponent gloves are off, civility is not an option. It's an excuse to be cut throat, to have your sites set on winning at all costs, and the whole dam country looses.

Classic British university type lecture. Really capable research academics being done but absolutely zero training being given to teach the academics how to communicate clearly. You can be sure that the gent has a very strong grasp of his subject. But his lecture is illogical and incoherent. Points are constantly being alluded to but not followed through. It’s very frustrating to listen to and leaves you thinking that you’re not quite being connected with. The narrative is somewhere in the background of the speakers mind but only sporadically elucidated. Such a shame because I’m totally with him in his thesis, if I grasp it, which seems to be that religion has strong psych-social benefits and functions as well as very destructive effects and we need to understand the former in order to mitigate the latter or remove it altogether.

We are here, we exist and are having this discussion among free agents. How do we explain why we are here? Either we are the result of a will guided by purposes, or we are the result of random processes that lack a will and a purpose. Isn't that the basic dilemma?

It does bet the question as to why Alice would want to send her children to a faith sponsored school though. Perhaps her argument would be that they provide a better education? I was brought up as a Catholic but had to go to an Anglican primary school, there being no other choice in my area in the 1950's. There was definite discrimination going on, I was never promoted to a higher class despite being in the top three over 3 years. Like Alice, I now reject the indoctrination I went through as a child and embrace humanism as my mantra.

I learned a valuable lesson about right and wrong: they aren't always split between good and bad. You can be right and still a jerk and you can be wrong and still deserve respect. I mishandled a worker's mistakes. I thought I was right and he was wrong. I mean, I was right in some ways, but I didn't handle his mistakes right. I didn't know this until after he willingly protected me. See, in downtown, I was conf ronted by a man with a pistoI. Thankfully, it turned out it was unIoaded; the guy was mistaken. But _before_ we knew this, the worker pushed me out of the way when the man was ready to fire. Once we discovered the thing was unloaded, the worker went after the guy and screamed he would never let him harm me. The beast was arres ted. I feel really bad. I was kind of insensitive to the worker, and yet he was willing to take a buIIet for me. I want to apologize to him. Someone can screw up morally, but it doesn't mean they don't deserve delicacy when you address the issue, you know what I mean? One day your cheating partner might save your life, to illustrate.

Digging for Answers Biblical Archaeologists are about as certain as you can be about these things that the conquest of Canaan as the Bible describes did not happen: no mass invasion from the outside by an Israelite army and no extermination of Canaanites as God commanded One thing archaeologists can tell us is whether or not a city was violently destroyed by outside invaders and whether a new group of people took up residence, Battle and destructions of cities leave archaeological footprints - things like soot(if the town was burned0, weapons, smashed pottery, and human bones. Mass migrations of people groups as the Bible describes with Israel entering Canaan would cause some cultural upheaval and leave some sort of remains for archaeologists to dig up and write long books about to help them get tenure. Remember those thirty-one Canaanite towns listed in the Book of Joshua (plus other towns on either side of the Jordan River)? Sixteen towns were destroyed according to the stories in the books of Numbers, Joshua and Judges. Of those sixteen, two or three maybe four cities show signs of violent desctruction at or around the time when Joshua and his army would have been ploughing through Canaan(thirteenth centuryBCE about 200 years before the time of King David)). That’s it The towns on the other side of the Jordan River, in Moab, don’t look like they were even occupied at the time. We also read in the Bible that twelve towns were taken over without a fight. But of those twelve only seven were even occupied at the time , according to archaeological findings. And of those same twelve towns that the Bible says weren’t destroyed, three actually do show signs of destruction. In other words, archaeology and the biblical story don’t line up well at all. Jericho, the first of the towns to be razed in the Book of Joshua, is the most famous example. Not only was Jericho minimally inhabited at the best of time, but it had no massive protective walls, which means the biblical story of the “walls of Jericho” tumbling down - at least that’s what a hundred years of digging there has shown us. What most everyone is certain about however, is that the Bible;’s version of events is not what happened. And that puts the question “How could God have all those Canaanites put to death?” in a different light, indeed. He didn’t. From Peter Enns The Bible Tells Me So, pp. 58-60 HarperOne , 2015.

If the Abrahamic god is defined as both independent of space-time and the creator of the universe then logically it cannot exist. To even say and determine existence means it has extension in space-time or is space-time itself. Abstract concepts are dependent upon physical minds. Creation and causation requires space-time in order to happen in the first place and be coherent at all.

I've concluded that both believers and atheists don't understand what communism is. They want to distance themselves from atrocities committed under its banner so desperately that they ignore, wilfully or otherwise, that those atrocities occurred NOT because the tenets of communism were adhered to, but because they were NOT. The same condemnations could be made of capitalism, whose body count, erosion of individual freedoms, coercion, and ubiquitous surveillance of the citizenry are no less abhorrent or complete. Edit: The irony of Roberts lamenting the characterisation of atheism as a "very dangerous idea" has not escaped.

Jim and Alice have both fallen into the idea that science and religion are different things. It's a mistake most people make. They are both ways of describing how the world works and why things are how they are. The Big mistake is almost everyone thinks that you have to believe in religion, and that is where the problems begin. I was brought up with the idea that religion must be "understood" or it is pointless. I was taught this by a wonderful "Holyman" a "Shaman", a "Druid". A preacher in the Welsh Methodist Chapel for over 60 years. My Grandfather. I was truly blessed. He shared his wonder at what was real and taught that we should be good to each other simply because it is so obviously right. I don't believe this, I know it. What would be the point in believing in a "Flood" and not understanding that the story aims to make you understand that bad behaviour is not a sound plan for your future but being a better person will probably result in a better future for all. We don't "believe" in Aesop's Fables but we understand their value. Belief without understanding is rather pointless.
